DBaaS is an exciting term that started to gain popularity in late 2011 and early 2012 and has continued to reach new heights every year, but what is it?

Basics of DBaaS

You may have heard of similar terms like IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS: Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service and Software as a Service.

DBaaS is of this ilk, standing for Database as a Service. Instead of using your infrastructure, you pay a monthly service fee based on the number of databases you have hosted, their size and any advanced features you might need.

No licensing fees to worry about, as it has all of the benefits of a cloud-based service.

The licensing costs of an Enterprise SQL server can be substantial at approximately £6k per CORE; if you need those features for a reasonably small database, it can feel costly.

Benefits of DBaaS

DBaaS can help by reducing this cost to a monthly fee on a shared server where you are only paying for part of the total environment.

This is a much more performance-focused basis allowing you to pay only for what you are using rather than the entire cost of hardware and software and the resource to look after this environment.

Have you heard of DBaaS before?
